PE

Our PE curriculum aims to provide opportunities for all children to become physically confident in ways that support their health, fitness and well-being, so that they can develop competence in a range of physical activities and lead healthy, active lives. We provide opportunities for children to be involved in a broad range of activities and to participate in festivals and competitions.

Our younger children learn to develop fundamental movement skills, developing agility, balance and coordination, working individually and with others. They do this in PE lessons, and outdoor play and, alongside older children in school, use of the extensive range of equipment available on our large school field at play and lunch time breaks. These include bikes, scooters, balls, ropes, our wooden clamber stack, traverse walls, chin up and jungle bars and tending the garden.

All children in school have dance, gymnastics, athletics, games and swimming as areas of focus. Alongside this we include a wide variety of sports and activities, such as climbing, squash, wheelchair basketball, and outdoor and adventurous activities such as orienteering, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, fell-walking and archery.

Older children use and apply the skills they are acquiring in a range of contexts. They learn about the importance of warming up and down and develop skills needed to evaluate and improve performance, including use of technology such as IPads to record their work. We really enjoy learning to play a range of games including lacrosse, hockey, netball, football, rugby and tennis, participating in local competitions and festivals.

The whole school has swimming lessons for 2 weeks during the summer term, travelling to the outdoor pool at Lazonby each day by train.
